Miami basketball gets its highest ranking since 2017

Following its 66-64 win over Virginia on Tuesday the Miami basketball team moved up to 14th in the AP Top 25 and 16th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami received 658 points in the AP Top 25 and 290 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami is the second highest-rated AP Top 25 team behind Virginia who is 14th and 12th.

Miami moved up eight spots in the AP Top 25 and six in the USA Today Coaches Poll after being ranked 22nd last week. The Hurricanes improved from 208 points in the AP Top 25 and 290 in the USA Today coaches poll last week. This is the highest ranking for Miami in the AP Poll since the they were sixth on December 18, 2017.

Miami won its eighth straight game with the victory over Virginia. The Hurricanes play their final non-conference game against Vermont on Wednesday. Miami begins its 18-game ACC stretch at Notre Dame on Friday night. Miami is 3-0 in the ACC with wins over Louisville, North Carolina State and Virginia.

In the Net Ratings that are used by the NCAA Tournament committee, Miami is 48th. Miami is the fifth-highest-ranked ACC team in the Net Ratings. Duke is 17th in the Net Ratings, Virginia 17th, North Carolina is 24th and Virginia Tech 26th. The Hurricanes are 3-1 this season versus quad-one opponents.

The Hurricanes need to continue stacking quad-one wins while defeating teams below them in the Net Ratings to improve their NCAA Tournament outlook. Miami is the sole team in the ACC with one loss. Miami should start 13-1 for the first time since 2016. The 2016 team advanced to the Southeast Regional Semifinal.

The ESPN Basketball Power Index has the Miami basketball team as favored to win in 12 of their last 16 games. That would be a 24-7 finish entering the ACC Tournament. Miami improved its NCAA Tournament chances to 65.6 percent from 46.7 percent a week ago according to TeamRankings.Com.

Miami is currently projected as a seventh seed per Team Rankings. Duke who is 13th, Virginia 15th and North Carolina 16th are the only ACC teams ahead of Miami by Team Rankings. Winning road games will be another key factor in Miami’s NCAA Tournament seeding. Miami won at Central Florida and Louisville this season.
