Miami basketball pulls away in win at Notre Dame

The Miami basketball team used a 9-0 run halfway through the second half, extended it to 17-5 and pulled away for a 76-65 win at Notre Dame. Miami improves to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. Nijel Pack had arguably his best game for Miami returning to his home state. Pack scored 21 points on 8-13 from the floor.

The Miami basketball team did a great job defensively in the second half. Notre Dame shot 12-29 from the floor and 5-14 on three-point attempts in the second half. Miami led 25-16 in the first half before Notre Dame used an 18-6 run to surge in front. Two Free throws by Isaiah Wong closed the Miami halftime deficit to 34-33.

Miami outscored Notre Dame 43-31 in the second half. The Hurricanes solved the Notre Dame defense in the final 20 minutes by making 15 of 23 two-point attempts. Miami made 29-57 from the floor to overcome 5-17 three-point shooting. Pack made all five of his three-point shots with the rest of the Miami team shooting 0-12.

Four Hurricanes finished in double figures led by Pack. Norchad Omier had 18 points and seven rebounds, Wong scored 15 and Jordan Miller had 12. Wong overcame 4-11 shooting by making all seven of his free attempts with four rebounds and three assists. Miller led Miami with eight rebounds.

As they frequently have over the past two seasons, Miami used turnovers to their advantage. Miami forced 17 Notre Dame turnovers that they turned into 25 points. The Hurricanes committed only nine turnovers that Notre Dame was only able to convert to seven points. Notre Dame had 11 first turnovers.

Trey Wertz led Notre Dame shooting 6-9 from the floor and 3-5 on three-point attempts. Dane Goodwin finished with 14 points on 7-11 from the floor. The rest of the Notre Dame team finished 12-3. Notre Dame finished 25-56 from the floor and made 9-24 three-point attempts. Miami had a 42-30 edge on points in the paint.

The Hurricanes also outscored the Fighting Irish 10-0 on fast break points. This was the only time Miami and Notre Dame will play this year. Miami ended a five-game losing streak to Notre Dame with the win on Friday. The Hurricanes will play the back half of two road games on Wednesday at Georgia Tech.
