Georgia Tech closes out Miami basketball with 12-0 run winning 76-70

Georgia Tech closed out the Miami basketball team with a 12-0 run to seize a 76-70 win over Miami in Atlanta on Wednesday night. Miami was in control of the game at 70-64 on a Norchad Omier jumper with 4:50 remaining. Georgia Tech began their run after the Omier basket. Lance Terry scored 24 and Miles Kelly 20 for Georgia Tech.

Miami looked like it would overcome six points on 1-11 from the floor by Isaiah Wong. Omier was in foul trouble all night. The Nicaraguan native scored 17 points and had eight rebounds in only 21 minutes. Omier played only seven minutes in the first half and doubled that after halftime before fouling out.

Georgia Tech scored the last eight points of its game-deciding run after Omier fouled out with 2:15 remaining. Omier is the only consistent Miami low post threat. Miami was plus one with Omier in the game against Georgia Tech. Jordan Miller matched Omier with 17 points and contributed three rebounds.

Georgia Tech made 17 of its 19 free throw attempts while Miami was 17-25. Miami left points on the board in the second half making only 14 of their 21 free throw attempts. The Hurricanes faltered as a team from the free throw line with no one particularly bad. Miami shot only 35.3 percent from the floor and 5-32 on threes.

With Omier limited in foul trouble, Georgia Tech finished with a 46-36 rebounding advantage. Rodney Howard led Georgia Tech with eight rebounds. Four other Yellow Jackets finished with at least six rebounds. Miami fought back from a 12-point deficit in the first half to cut the deficit to 39-35 at halftime.

Miami led throughout most of the second half before the closing 12-0 run by Georgia Tech. Wooga Poplar had an excellent second half scoring all nine of his points. Miami will be off for a week before returning home for their first game at the Watsco Center since December 20 versus Boston College next Wednesday.
