Injuries, inconsistent play from the wide receivers and not completely meshing with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis led Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to have one of the biggest regressions among signal callers nationally in 2022. Van Dyke was included among “QBs who dramatically improved or regressed in 2022”

Tyler Van Dyke was on the wrong side of the list profiled by Isaac Trotter of 247 Sports. Following the 2021 season when he completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions Van Dyke was named the ACC rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year.

Van Dyke completed 63.2 percent of his pass attempts in 2022 for 1,835 yards. Miami averaged 321.1 passing yards per game in 2021 which was 10th nationally. The Hurricanes fell to 239.1 passing yards per game in 2022 which finished 60th nationally. Miami had 51 more attempts in 2021.

Other QBs listed by Trotter as his biggest fallers were Spencer Petras of Iowa, Will Levis of Kentucky and Brennan Armstrong of Virginia. North Carolina State QB Devin Leary and Kedon Slovis of Pittsburgh were listed as other notable fallers from ACC schools. Leary suffered through injuries in 2022 as Van Dyke did.

"TYLER VAN DYKE, MIAMIVan Dyke QBR in 2021: 80.1, No. 11 nationallyVan Dyke QBR in 2022: 51.7, No. 82 nationally“The skinny: Tyler Van Dyke entered 2022 with a ton of hype and hoopla after a really good redshirt-freshman season. But the wheels came off for Van Dyke and the Miami offense under new coordinator Josh Gattis. Miami finished 104th in the country in yards per play (4.8), and Van Dyke really struggled. He totaled just 10 passing touchdowns and five interceptions. Miami’s wide receiver room was not a big strength, either. Gattis, Mario Cristobal and the entire Miami coaching staff publicly praised Van Dyke’s business-like approach to the quarterback position, but it’s clear things need to change in a big way in 2023.”"

Armstrong transferred to North Carolina State following Leary who transferred to Kentucky. Slovis transferred to BYU. The ACC was projected to have an elite group of QBs in 2022 that fell far short of expectations. Leary, Sam Hartman of Wake Forest and Van Dyke were the top three vote-getters for preseason ACC Player of the Year.

Hartman transferred to Notre Dame for 2023 and redshirt freshman Drake Maye of North Carolina was named first-team All-ACC QB, Offensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year. Van Dyke set his personal high and the second-best in Miami history with 496 passing yards against North Carolina this season.

Van Dyke followed up the game versus North Carolina by throwing for 342 yards, two TDs and no interceptions as Miami won 20-14 at Virginia Tech. Van Dyke suffered a shoulder injury against Duke a week later and threw for only 188 yards the rest of the season. Miami needs Van Dyke healthy and in 2021 form in 2023.
