Miami basketball suffers late overtime loss at North Carolina State

Ernest Ross came off the bench to score 17 points and contribute nine rebounds to lead North Carolina State to an 83-81 win in overtime leading the Wolfpack over the Miami basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh. Ross had a rebound putback with 30 seconds left and hit a free throw for the final seconds.

Ross entered the game averaging 2.2 points per game and 1.7 rebounds. North Carolina State had to play Ross with injuries to two other frontcourt players in the Wolfpack’s rotation. Isaiah Wong led four Miami basketball players with 25 points and had six rebounds. Norchad Omier had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The game was back and forth in the second half after NC State led 42-32 at halftime. Miami had three five-point leads earlier in the game before a North Carolina State surge. North Carolina State closed the second half with a 14-4 run. Miami opened the second half with an 8-0 run to get within two points.

NC State stretched the lead back to nine points before Miami regained the lead 59-58 on a Jordan Miller layup with 9:59 remaining. Miami was in control late in regulation with a chance to put the game away. The Hurricanes led by three with three minutes remaining before NC State scored the next six points.

A Miller three with 27 seconds remaining tied the game eventually forcing overtime. Miami led by three in overtime, but North Carolina State offensive rebounds hurt the Hurricanes throughout the game. North Carolina State had a 15 to four advantage in offensive rebounds that led to a 16-3 edge in second-chance points.

Miami committed 17 turnovers to four for NC State. The Wolfpack had a 23 to seven edge in points off turnovers and outscored the Hurricanes 52-36 on points in the paint. North Carolina State had 35-20 advantage in points off the bench. D.J. Burns had 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists off the NC State bench.

NC State was able to overcome 12-20 from the free throw line with Miami shooting 17-21. Miller finished with 13 points and Bensley Joseph 11 for the other Miami basketball players in double figures. Terquavion Smith led NC State with 20 points but shot just 7-20 from the floor and 2-9 on three-point attempts.

Miami and North Carolina State split the season series with each winning at home. The Hurricanes fall to 14-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC with the loss. North Carolina State is 14-4 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. Miami returns home on Monday to host Syracuse. The Orange are 11-6 overall, 4-2 in the ACC and host Notre Dame Saturday.
