Miami basketball falls one spot in both polls

The Miami basketball team fell in the polls for the second straight week following its loss at North Carolina State on Saturday. Miami fell one spot in the AP Top 25 to 17th and 16th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Syracuse visits Miami on Monday night. Miami plays at Duke on Saturday in its only other game this week.

The Miami basketball team received 487 points in the rankings this week. That put the Hurricanes firmly 17th. Auburn is 16th with 553 points. College of Charleston who is 18-1 is 18th with 351 points. Miami received 266 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami is 98 points behind number 15 Kansas State.

The game versus Syracuse on Monday night is the third in the last six games for Miami. Miami defeated Boston College on Wednesday at the Watsco Center before the loss on Saturday at North Carolina State.   Miami is in a five-way tie for second place in the ACC that includes Syracuse at 5-2 two games behind Clemson.

Miami was ranked as high as 12th in the AP Poll this year on January 2. The biggest goals for Miami are winning the ACC regular season and tournament and advancing far in the NCAA Tournament. Miami has work to do in the NCAA Net Ratings which are the only metrics that matter for the NCAA Tournament.

The Hurricanes are currently 39th in the Net Ratings. Miami’s 1-1 road record and 5-2 record versus teams in quad one are good numbers for their NCAA Tournament resume. Joe Lunardi of ESPN projected Miami as a five seed in the Midwest Regional playing the first two rounds in Orlando.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has Miami as a fourth seed in the South Regional also playing its first two games in Orlando. Lunardi posted his brackets on Friday. Palm updated his bracketology on Monday. Miami needs to continue winning games versus Quad 1 opponents. Duke who is 25th in the Net Ratings is a Miami Quad one game.
