Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Tuesday afternoon that quarterback Jake Garcia to leave Miami, enter transfer portal, sources say.” Garcia will have three seasons of eligibility remaining after leaving the Miami football program. Garcia missed most of the 2021 season with an injury before underperforming in 2022.

In two seasons with the Miami football program, Garcia completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 950 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions. The report about Garcia entering the transfer portal comes a day after Miami lost QBs coach Frank Ponce. Ponce was hired as the offensive coordinator at Appalachian State.

Thamel stated that “According to a source, Garcia is looking to enroll somewhere immediately and play spring ball to learn a system and compete for the starting job.” Garcia enters the transfer portal one day before the deadline for players to enter before another window is open from May 1-15.

Garcia was inconsistent as the Miami starting QB after Tyler Van Dyke was hindered by a shoulder injury throughout the second half of the 2022 season. Garcia finished the 2022 season completing 59.1 percent of his passes for 803 yards, five TDs and four interceptions. Jacurri Brown shared time at QB with Garcia.

Garcia was 15-31 for 125 yards, no TDs and no interceptions in his lone start versus Virginia Tech. Garcia scored the game-winning two-point conversion in the fourth overtime as Miami defeated Virginia Tech 14-12. The Hurricanes scored their 12 points on four Andres Borregales field goals prior to the Garcia game-winner.

The decision by Garcia to enter the transfer portal was not surprising with starter Van Dyke returning in 2023. That Garcia waited until a day before the closure of the postseason transfer portal window was surprising. Garcia enters the transfer portal after attending five different high schools.
