Miami football has transfer options adding quarterback depth
The loss of Jake Garcia to the transfer portal left the Miami football program with returning starter Tyler Van Dyke, backup Jacurri Brown and 2023 signee Emory Williams as the scholarship quarterbacks on the Hurricanes’ roster. Miami could seek to add a transfer QB to their 2023 roster.
Established starters who are in the transfer portal are likely looking for new programs with a chance to start. Pete Thamel of ESPN who broke the news about Garcia entering the transfer portal reported that he left Miami seeking a better opportunity to become a starter. Van Dyke is the near-certain starter for Miami in 2023.
Miami could see a young QB in the transfer portal to add depth. Entering the 2023 season with three scholarship QBs is dangerous for Miami. The injury to Van Dyke in 2022 left Miami with Brown and Garcia as basically the only options to play QB. Peyton Matocha who added depth has since graduated and left Miami.
Update: Walker Howard committed to Mississippi on Wednesday
Former LSU QB Walker Howard and Sam Huard of Washington are young QBs who might be willing to back up Van Dyke for a year and compete with Brown to be the primary backup in 2023. Howard has four years of eligibility remaining and Huard has three. Van Dyke has two years of eligibility remaining.
Howard was rated by 247 Sports on Tuesday as the best available player in the transfer portal ahead of the deadline on Wednesday. Players had until Wednesday to enter their names into the transfer portal. The Wednesday deadline is only for transfers to enter the portal, not to announce their next destination.
Huard is the second-best QB available in the transfer portal. Howard and Huard will be highly sought after. It seems like a long shot that either would consider Miami. With three QBs on the current roster, the Miami football program has to at least inquire. Also hindering Miami is that the Hurricanes are currently without a QB coach.
Frank Ponce who was the QB coach in 2022 was hired by Appalachian State as the offensive coordinator and QB coach on Monday. Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders and Chance Nolan of Oregon State were also named by 247 Sports, but are more experienced QBs looking for immediate opportunities to play.
There is a second transfer portal window from May 1-15. Expect numerous QBs to enter the transfer portal following spring practice. Many depth charts are set after spring. Many QBs that lose those competitions will enter the transfer portal in May. On3 has several other uncommitted transfer QBs listed.
