The drama with five-star Miami Hurricanes cornerback commit Cormani McClain ended on Thursday night when he flipped to Colorado. McCain initially denied visiting Boulder last weekend, but after geotagging himself in Tampa, the Lakeland prospect was called out for his attempt to deny the visit.

McClain had been committed to Miami since late October. The Miami Hurricanes 2023 football class dropped from fifth to seventh without McClain. Miami signed CBs Damari Brown, Antione Jackson and Robert Stafford in the class of 2023. Brown, Jackson and Stafford all received four-star grades.

The departures earlier this week of Miami Hurricanes quarterback coach Frank Ponce and signal caller Jake Garcia have created a lot of speculation about what will happen to offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. Most Miami football pundits have projected that Gattis will not return for the Hurricanes in 2023.

Alex Donno on the Locked on Canes Podcast and David Lake and Gaby Urrutia on Through the Smoke all discussed the likelihood that Gattis is looking for a new job for 2023. Lake compared the Mario Cristobal approach of speaking to coaches privately and allowing them to look for new jobs instead of getting fired.

Gattis as OC and wide receives coach and Ponce as the QBs coach for Miami was an unusual setup. If Gattis leaves as is now expected Miami seems more likely to hire an OC who would also be the QB coach and look for a separate WRs coach. Both podcasts reported that Gattis and Ponce had different approaches with the QB.

The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team has its five-game winning streak broken with a 71-61 loss at number 20 North Carolina State on Thursday night. Miami would have had a chance to break into the AP top 25 with a win on Thursday night. The Hurricanes were fifth among others receiving votes this week.

The 17th-ranked Miami men’s basketball team will travel to Duke this weekend to play the (surprisingly) unranked Blue Devils. Miami is 15-3 overall and 6-2 and in a four-way tie for second place in the ACC. Duke is 13-5 overall, 4-3 and in ninth place in the ACC. Miami won last season at then number two Duke.

Ahead of the Duke game on Saturday Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald compared how the Hurricanes’ basketball and football programs have fared versus Duke recently. The results have defied expectations. Jim Larranaga has provided the Miami basketball team with stability while the football program has had multiple coaches.
