Miami basketball falls in both national polls

The Miami Basketball team fell to 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 and 19th in the USA Today Coaches poll. Miami defeated Syracuse 82-78 on Monday and lost 68-66 at Duke on Saturday. In addition to an 83-81 loss at North Carolina State on January 14, the last three Miami games have been decided by four points or less.

The Miami basketball team fell three spots in the AP Top 25 and XX in the USA Today poll. Miami earned 328 points in the AP Top 25 which is 44 behind number 19 UConn who has spiraled since being ranked number one earlier this season. Miami has 201 points in the USA Today Coaches Pol, two behind number 18 Charleston.

Miami reached a high ranking of 12th on January 2. That was the highest ranking for the Miami basketball team since December 2017. Miami continues a stretch of three straight road games on Tuesday night at 7-13, 5-4 Florida State and plays at 13-7, 6-3 Pittsburgh on Saturday. Miami is 15-4 overall and 6-3 in the ACC.

The Hurricanes are tied for third in the ACC with North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Wake Forest. Miami plays at North Carolina on February 13 and hosts Wake Forest on February 18. Clemson leads the ACC with an 8-1 conference record and Virginia who Miami defeated last month at home is second at 7-2.

Miami plays at Clemson on February 4. After the three straight road games Miami will conclude the season with six of its last nine games at home. Miami has work to do in the NCAA Net Ratings that help determine the NCAA Tournament berths and seedings. The Hurricanes are currently 46th in the net ratings.

Miami is 11-0 at home this season and has a 4-3 record versus Quad 1 opponents. The game against Pittsburgh is a quad-one contest for Miami. Florida State will be quad one for Miami. The Hurricanes need to keep building their resume to earn a high seed in the NCAA Tournament.

A top-four finish will earn Miami a double bye in the ACC Tournament. Miami finished fourth in the ACC in 2021-22. The Hurricanes defeated Boston College in the 2022 ACC Tournament quarterfinals before losing to Duke. The 2023 ACC Tournament is at Greensboro Coliseum March 7-11.

Miami returns home to host Virginia Tech on January 31. Virginia Tech is 11-8 overall, 1-7 in the ACC after suffering a heartbreaking late 51-50 loss at Clemson on Saturday. The ACC is likely to remain tight throughout the 2022-23 season with no dominant team at the top of the standings.
