Reaching out to one of the best recruiters in college football

Hartline has been on the Ohio State staff under Urban Meyer and Ryan Day since 2017 and steadily worked his way up. Earlier this month Hartline was promoted to Offensive coordinator while retaining his WR coach position. There has been a lot of speculation if Day will give up his play-calling duties.

Cristobal could leverage that at Miami Hartline will call plays. If Hartline wants to be a play caller he could choose to leave Ohio State. Hartline is one of the best recruiters in the country and has done very well signing players in South Florida. Ohio State has a commitment from 2024 five-star WR Jeremiah Smith from Chaminade-Madonna.

Second attempt at elite offensive play caller

Cristobal reportedly attempted to hire Toledo head coach Jason Candle as the Miami OC last year. Toledo averaged 33.3 PPG, 401.7 total yards, 224.6 passing and 171.1 rushing in 2022 as the Rockets finished 7-5. Candle is 54-32 in eight seasons at Toledo. Candle was a Toledo assistant from 2009-15 before becoming head coach.

Any of the above candidates would be a home run hire for Cristobal and the Miami football program. The expectations that any of them would choose to accept an offer from Miami should be low. Cristobal needs to make sure that the future of the Miami offense improves significantly from the 2022 lack of production.
