The anemic numbers the Miami football team had in 2020 under offensive coordinator Josh Gattis who was fired on Friday are eerily similar to Dan Enos who held the same position with the Hurricanes in 2019. The Miami football team regressed significantly offensively under Gattis in his only season as the Miami OC.

The Miami football team averaged 23.6 points per game in 2022 which was 97th nationally, 95th averaging 367.1 total yards per game, 60th with 239.0 yards passing and 128.1 rushing which was 95th in the football bowl subdivision. Enos spent the last three seasons as the Maryland OC and quarterbacks coach.

Arkansas just hired Enos for the same position. Miami was 90th averaging 25.7 PPG, 98th with 367.2 total YPG, 52nd averaging 249.7 passing yards and 120th averaging 118.08 rushing YPG in the only season under Enos in 2019. Maryland was 66th this season averaging 28.2 PPG.

After firing Enos former Miami head coach Manny Diaz nailed the hire replacing Enos with former SMU OC and now head coach Rhett Lashlee. Miami ranked in the top 30 in scoring and passing offense in the two seasons under Lashlee and top 35 in total offense with the running game only as high as 67th in those two years.

Enos and Gattis were hired by Miami as highly regarded offensive assistants that had experience working at Alabama under Nick Saban. Enos was the head coach at Central Michigan from 2010 through 2014. In 2018 Enos was the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at national runner-up Alabama.

Gattis was the OC and wide receivers coach at Michigan from 2019 through 2021. In 2018 Gattis was on the staff at Alabama with Enos as the Co-OC WRs coach at Alabama. Gattis earned the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach nationally in 2021 as Michigan qualified for the College Football Playoff.

Mario Cristobal and the Miami football staff have to get the replacement hire of Gattis correct. Another season of an anemic offense would put Miami in a huge hole in the second season under Cristobal. Miami is still searching to add transfer outside WRs. Stabilizing the offensive staff should help add a transfer WRs this spring.
