Miami football recruiting rankings not impacted by Antione Jackson loss
The news that safety Antione Jackson has asked the Miami football program for release from the National Letter of Intent he signed last month will not impact the Hurricanes’ 2023 class rankings. The 2023 Miami class is ranked seventh nationally and first in the ACC. Jackson reclassified from 2024 to 2023.
Jackson is the 241st-ranked player, 19th safety and 48th prospect in Florida in the class of 2023. Some projections expect Jackson to move to cornerback in college. The departure of Miami defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to Alabama and the hiring of Lance Guidry as his replacement did not play a role in Jackson wanting a release.
In a since-deleted tweet, Jackson responded to a Tweet reporting the release by Frank Tucker of Canes Country that it was in his words “💯% true all love❤.” Jackson was one of three defensive backs the Miami football program signed in the 2023 class. The departure of Jackson could allow Miami to add another transfer.
Miami received a commitment from Jackson in July 2022 after he was originally committed to Georgia. The Bulldogs received a commitment from Jackson in March 2022 as part of their 2024 class. Per David Wilson of the Miami Herald, Jackson had 32 tackles, 22 passes defended and one interception in 2022.
Without Jackson, Miami is left with four-star signees Damari Brown and Robert Stafford at CB in the class of 2023. Miami also added transfers Devonte Brown (Damari’s brother) from Central Florida and Terry Roberts from Iowa to the 2023 roster. There is no confirmation about what Jackson’s next destination is.
During the recruiting process in addition to Georgia, Jackson was interested in Miami. Late in the recruiting process, Jackson turned down Colorado and East Carolina to remain with his commitment to the Miami football program. Jackson’s girlfriend reportedly will be attending East Carolina.
Jackson was one of 17 blue chip signees in the 2023 Miami class. The Hurricanes were thin with or without Jackson in the 2023 class. Three-star signee Kaleb Spencer who played linebacker in high school is projected by many recruiting analysts to be a safety in college and would greatly help the Miami depth in the secondary.
