The Miami football program has had its fair share of coaching flux within the past month or two. Head coach Mario Cristobal will have his hands full replacing offensive coordinator Josh Gattis who was fired, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele who left for Alabama, quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce and linebackers coach Charlie Strong.

The results generated in 2022 were abysmal to put it lightly, The offense ranked in the lower percentile, the defense let up scores on bang-bang plays and the 5-7 result looked just about as bad on the field as the record makes it seem. The 2022 chapter is closed and 2023 spring practice is upcoming.

Mario Cristobal has a chance to leave his inaugural season problems in the past and really find fits on his coaching staff for the schemes and recruiting strategies he wants in place in Coral Gables. The first coaching change to hit on would be the elephant in the room, Josh Gattis. It caught almost everyone off guard.

The formal Broyles award winner didn’t translate his 2021 College Football Playoff offense from Michigan down south. From third-down inefficiency to the musical chairs game of a quarterbacks room, Gattis seemed to have a dart board of weekly problems that something would land on each chance given.

With Gattis’ departure, there comes an open spot as wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator for the Miami football program, Mario Cristobal likely will look to a more simplified game plan and play caller than to roll out the Big Ten styled pound the football on offense.
