The Miami basketball team will attempt to move into a virtual first-place tie with Pittsburgh and Virginia when they play at North Carolina on Monday night. Miami is 20-5 overall and 11-4 in the ACC. Pittsburgh and Virginia are 11-3. Virginia plays at Louisville on Tuesday night and Pittsburgh hosts Boston College.

Miami enters the game at North Carolina with a four-game winning streak. North Carolina ended a three-game losing streak with a 91-71 win over Clemson on Saturday. Miami is in an excellent position to earn a double bye in the ACC Tournament awarded to the top four teams in the conference.

Miami and North Carolina will play on Monday night for the only time in the 2022-23 regular season. North Carolina has struggled all season but might have turned their season around with the dominant win over Clemson. The eight-point win for Miami over 3-22 Louisville was far closer than the 20.5-point spread projected.

North Carolina enters the game on Monday night in eighth place in the ACC. The game against North Carolina is a big opportunity for the Miami basketball team to add to its 4-4 record against quadrant one opponents. North Carolina is on the NCAA Tournament bubble and is 0-8 versus quad-one opponents.

Spread:  Miami +4.5 (-115) North Carolina 4.5 (-105) Total: 153.5 Moneyline: Miami (+150) North Carolina -182

Miami leads the ACC averaging 79.0 points per game and North Carolina is third at 78.44 PPG. The total is four points less than the cumulative averages between Miami and North Carolina. If Miami has another poor defensive game as they did versus Louisville on Saturday night the over seems likely to happen versus North Carolina.

The spread is a tough bet. Miami should be able to cover the 4.5 points if not outright win. The Hurricanes have to be able to tighten up their defense. The three best players on each team match up evenly. North Carolina is led by center Armando Bacot and guards Caleb Love and R.J. Davis.

Bacot, Davis and Love combined to score 59 points in the North Carolina win over Clemson. Bacot also had 11 rebounds and set the Tar Heels’ career record in that category earlier this season. Norchad Omier, Nijel Pack and Isaiah Wong combined for 64 points and 14 rebounds in the Miami win over Louisville.
