The Miami football program has finalized and made official the hirings of Shannon Dawson as offensive coordinator, Lance Guidry as defensive coordinator and Derek Nicholson will fill Charlie Strong’s role as linebackers coach.

With these unfamiliar names emerging for the extended future, Miami football fans are looking for more information about the new coaches. Let’s take a dive into the names. Starting off will be the first hire, Lance Guidry. Guidry has taken the non-traditional route for coaching.

After his graduate assistant role at McNeese State, he headed down to the high school ranks for five years with his specialty being in defensive backs. After his tenure at the high school level, Guidry earned his way up to McNeese State’s head coach after jobs with Miami (OH) and Western Kentucky.

After his McNeese State job, Guidry held defensive coordinator and safeties jobs at Southeastern Louisiana, Florida Atlantic and most recently, Marshall. This brings us to the present where Guidry will accept his first power five coaching position with the Miami football program. Guidry has almost thirty years of coaching experience.

Guidry has a fired-up attitude and a defensive focus on a reliable secondary, both things that the Miami football program was missing last season. It should be a bit of a change-up for this Miami defense to go from Kevin Steele to Lance Guidry, but in more ways than one, this change can help the team.

On the recruiting side of things, Guidry has strong ties to the state of Louisiana, which hosts some of the best prospects in the country. On the field, whether or not other defensive coaching personnel are retained or not, Guidry can sand the edges of an already improving Miami secondary.
