The Miami Hurricanes baseball team began the 2023 season with a 9-5 loss to Penn State in the first of a three-game series. Penn State led 9-2 after 8.5 innings. Miami rallied too late. David Lake of Inside the U took “A look at how running backs have fared in offenses Shannon Dawson has been a part of.”

Penn State took control of the game early versus the Miami Hurricanes baseball team with four runs in the second inning and one in the third. Miami starter Gage Ziehl was knocked out in the third inning after being credited with two innings pitched, nine hits, five earned runs, five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The Miami bullpen was unable to shut down Penn State with each of their four relief pitches allowing one run. Six Miami players had one hit each. Miami and Penn State will play at 7 PM ET on Saturday night and 1 PM ET on Sunday to conclude the three-game series. Miami has not announced Saturday or Sunday starting pitchers.

In his look at the running backs under Dawson, Lake listed Charles Sims at West Virginia in 2013 and Ito Smith at Southern Mississippi in 2016 and 2017 as 1,000-yard rushers under Dawson. Sims scored 11 touchdowns in 2013 and Smith scored 30 combined in his two 1,000-yard seasons.

Lake calculated that under Dawson the leading rushers averaged 888 yards and eight TDs excluding the 2020 covid season. Henry Parrish led Miami with 616 rushing yards and four TDs in 2022. Miami has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Mark Walton had 1,117 and 14 TDs in 2016.

Canes Warning examined how quarterbacks have performed under Dawson on Thursday and Lake discussed the wide receivers under the Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator earlier this week. Miami needs significant improvement from their skill position players on offense during the 2023 season.
