Miami Hurricanes News: Baseball wins, WBB loses and FB recruiting
The Miami Hurricanes baseball team won its season-opening series versus Penn State with a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 3-2 win. The Miami women’s basketball team lost 77-66 at Syracuse falling to 17-10 overall 10-6 in the ACC. Rivals.Com profiled several top 50 recruits Miami is targeting.
Penn State dominated Miami for most of the season opener on Friday night. The Nittany Lions led 6-1 after six innings. Miami scored one in the seventh before both teams each scored three runs in the eighth to close out the scoring. Gage Ziehl struggled for Miami allowing five runs, all earned on nine hits in two innings.
Miami was dominant in a 10-2 win on Saturday night. Karson Ligon pitched 6.2 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Zach Levenson and Edgardo Villegas each had three RBIs. Penn State took control on Sunday with single runs in the third and fourth innings that they held until the ninth.
Dominic Pitelli led off the ninth inning for Miami with a single but then was caught stealing for the first out. After a strikeout. Villegas singled to center with two outs to keep Miami alive. On the first pitch, he faced preseason All-American C.J. Kayfus, homered to right field scoring Villegas and giving Miami the 3-2 win.
The Miami women’s basketball team traveled to Syracuse with 10 wins in their last 13 games. Syracuse outscored Miami 19-11 in the first quarter and maintained at least a two-possession lead for the remainder of the game to put the Hurricanes away 77-68. Miami dropped to 17-10 overall and 10-6 tied for sixth in the ACC.
Last week Adam Gorney of Rivals.Com profiled the top 50 2024 recruits and which programs are pursuing them. Miami is strongly pursuing nine of the top 50 on Rivals list per Gorney. Four-star wide receiver JoJo Trader is the recruit on the list most strongly considering Miami and is favored to pick the Hurricanes.
The only commitment in the 2024 Miami Hurricanes recruiting class is kicker Abram Murray. The 2023 Miami class didn’t start gaining momentum until the spring. Mario Cristobal is methodical in everything he does. Patience is required. After signing the seventh-ranked 2023 class, Miami should sign a highly-ranked 2024 class.
