Miami football season opening betting odds versus Miami-Ohio out
The Miami football team has opened as a 17-point favorite for the September 1 season opener over Miami (Ohio) according to FanDuel. FanDuel earlier this month posted the betting odds for the Texas A&M game on September 9. Miami finished 5-7 in 2022 and Miami (Ohio) finished 6-7 last season.
The Miami football team did not qualify for a bowl for the first time since 2007. The Redhawks won the Frisco Football Classic over North Texas 27–14. In their only meeting in 1987, the Hurricanes defeated the then Redskins 54-3. The Hurricanes finished the 1987 season 12-0 and won the national championship.
Miami (Ohio) was 5-6 in 1987. Both teams featured anemic offenses in 2022. Miami finished 97th nationally averaging 23.6 points per game. Miami (Ohio) was 113th averaging 20.2 PPG. The Redhawks won behind its defense in 2022 allowing 22.6 PPG which was 35th nationally. Miami allowed 26.8 PPG which was 67th.
The Miami Hurricanes were 88th in total offense averaging 367.4 PPG. Miami (Ohio) was 122nd in total offense averaging 305.6 yards per game. Miami (Ohio) was significantly below its scoring defense in yards allowed per game in 2022. The Redhawks were 61st allowing 373.1 YPG.
Miami was 65th nationally in 2022 allowing 375.2 YPG. The Hurricanes were incredibly inconsistent defensively in 2022. Miami allowed 20 points or less six times in 2022 and had five games of 40 points or more allowed. Miami (Ohio) played two power five opponents in 2022 and one that’s moving up in 2023.
The Redhawks lost 37-13 at Kentucky in their 2022 season opener, were defeated 38-17 at Cincinnati who is switching from the American Athletic Conference in 2022 to the Big XII in 2023 and earned a 17-14 win at Northwestern in week four. Miami (Ohio) finished 4-4 in the Mid-American Conference in 2022.
Miami has to play with intensity in the season opener. After playing Kentucky, Cincinnati and Northwestern in 2022, the Redhawks will not be intimidated. Miami was 2-10 versus the point spread in 2022 and 1-4 against the number at home. Miami (Ohio) was 6-7 versus the point spread in 2022.
The Miami Hurricanes were 1-6 versus the spread at home in 2022 and 1-4 as a favorite at Hard Rock Stadium. The Miami Redhawks were 3-3 on the road versus the spread and 2-2 against the number as a road underdog. In the first game of the season with a high point spread it will be interesting to see if Miami can cover.
