Miami Hurricanes News: Canes at NFL Combine, Baseball loses at UF
Will Mallory and Tyrique Stevenson represented the Miami Hurricanes football program well at the NFL Combine over the weekend. The Miami baseball team was run-ruled 14-4 after eight innings losing to lose the deciding game of a three-game series at Florida this weekend. The Miami football team is off until Tuesday.
Mallory led all tight ends with a 4.54 40-yard dash, finished in the top five in the 10-second split and vertical jump and ninth in the broad jump. Stevenson finished in the top 10 in several categories and ran a 4.45 40. Mallory is projected as a bottom of the roster player and Stevenson as an eventual average NFL starter.
The Miami baseball team lost the series opener to Florida on Friday night 10-4 and rallied from a 6-1 deficit on Saturday night to win 14-6. Miami’s win on Saturday night was lost among the men’s basketball team defeating Pittsburgh to earn a share of the ACC Regular season championship.
Miami will play its first game in the ACC Tournament on Thursday as the top seed at Noon ET. The Hurricanes will play Syracuse or Wake Forest. Syracuse and Wake Forest will play at noon on Wednesday. The 2023 ACC Tournament is the first time since 2013 that the Miami Hurricanes will be the number seed.
Head coach Mario Cristobal, fourth-year junior quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, fourth-year sophomore offensive lineman Jalen Rivers, sophomore linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and junior safety Kamren Kinchens all spoke to the media following the opening spring practice on Saturday.
Christopher Stock of Inside the U wrote about several Miami players who will be out for spring practice with injuries. Among the players who are not expected to participate this spring are projected starters, offensive tackle Zion Nelson, defensive end Akheem Mesidor, defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and safety James Williams.
Miami will return to the Greentree Practice Fields on Tuesday. This is a critical spring for Miami as the Hurricanes incorporate 33 new players on the roster, five new coaches plus Jason Taylor elevated to defensive ends coach. We could hear from New coordinators Lance Guidry and Shannon Dawson this week.
