The 70-68 win by the Miami basketball team over Indiana in the NCAA Women’s tournament completed a sweep by the Hurricanes over the Hoosiers. The Miami Men’s basketball team eliminated Indiana 81-65 in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. That’s only the 10th time this has occurred.

The reactions on social media were vast. Head football coach Mario Cristobal praised the Miami basketball teams and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson also lauded Katie Meier and her team. The Miami women’s team won as the ninth seed at number one Indiana on Monday night.

Entering the 2023 NCAA Tournament a number one seed had not been eliminated before the Sweet 16 since 2009. Mississippi won on Sunday at number-one seed Stanford to end the streak. The Miami women’s basketball team advances to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 since 1992.

The 1992 team was seeded second and had to win only one game to advance to the Sweet 16 after receiving a bye in the first round. This is the first time that the Miami women’s basketball team has ever won two games in the NCAA Tournament. Miami will play Villanova at 2:30 PM ET in Greenville, South Carolina on Friday.

Miami defeating Indiana in the Men’s and Women’s tournaments as a lower seed in each makes their wins particularly impressive. Both the Men and Women have difficult games in the regional semifinals. The Men play number one seed Houston and Villanova is the fourth seed next up for the women.

Magic Johnson taking notice should help Meier’s program. Praising Destiny Harden and the fact he was watching the game is great publicity and recognition for the Miami basketball program. Harden has made big shots before with a buzzer-beater versus Louisville in the 2022 ACC Tournament.

This was the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance for Miami under Meier and her 11th overall. The win over Indiana is the first time Meier has led a team to the Sweet 16. Miami is one win away from advancing the deepest it has in program history. The Men reached their first Elite Eight in 2022.

The Sweet 16 run by the Miami women’s basketball team came after a lot of adversity this season. Meier was suspended for the first three games of the 2022-23 season after a suspension regarding NCAA infractions. Miami is on probation for questionable penalties regarding Name, Image and Likeness with the Cavidner twins.
