Not many people were talking about the Miami Hurricanes being a legitimate contender in this year’s edition of the NCAA Tournament, despite being a No. 5 seed.

Now, here we are heading into the Sweet 16 and Miami is all of a sudden in the mix. The ‘Canes handedly beat No. 12 Drake, 63-56, in the Round of 64 and then crushed No. 4 Indiana by a final score of 85-69 in the Round of 32.

Miami has a tough challenge in front of it in No. 1 Houston, but the Hurricanes are well in the mix for their first every men’s college basketball national championship.

When was the Hurricanes’ last national championship

The Miami Hurricanes are one of 12 teams left in the Sweet 16 who have never won a men’s basketball national championship. In fact, they have never won a basketball national championship in men’s or women’s versions of the sport.

Last year was the Hurricanes best finish in the men’s tournament, making it to the Elite 8 as a No. 10 seed, before losing to the eventual national champion, Kansas Jayhawks, by a final score of 76-50.

Miami’s odds to win national championship

Miami has the second longest odds to win the national championship heading into the Sweet 16. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, there have been few upsets in their region which has resulted in the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 seeds all advancing to the Elite 8.

Miami may not have the second worst team left in terms of skill set and ability, but the ‘Canes certainly have the toughest path remaining, having to defeat No. 1 Houston and then the winner of No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Xavier.

Not only that, but if the Hurricanes get through the Midwest Region, they’ll likely have to face one of UConn, UCLA, or Gonzaga in the Final Four.

It’s not impossible, but Miami has a tough path ahead of them to win its first every national championship.
