The Miami basketball teams are each in the regional semifinals for the first time ever. The Miami men’s team will play number one seed Houston in the Midwest Regional Semifinal in Kansas City and the women will play fourth-seeded Villanova in the Greenville two regional. This is Miami coach Katie Meier’s first Sweet 16.

The Miami men’s basketball team has advanced to the Sweet 16 in consecutive years for the first time in program history. Miami advanced to the Midwest Regional Final last season before losing to eventual national champion Kansas. Jordan Miller and Isaiah Wong are the only returning starters from last season’s team.

Miami has been balanced offensively all season on its way to earning a share of the ACC regular season title. Nijel Pack led Miami with 21 points in the first-round win versus Drake and Isaiah Wong led the Hurricanes with 27 in the second-round victory over Indiana. Five different players have led Miami in scoring this season.

Sophomore guard Wooga Poplar practiced with the Miami basketball team on Thursday in Kansas City after leaving the game versus Indiana on Sunday and not returning. Jim Larranaga said it will depend on how Poplar feels on Friday if he will start versus Houston. Bensley Joseph would start if Poplar is injured.

The Miami women’s basketball team won two games in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. In 1992 when Miami advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time, they had a first-round bye as the second seed and won one game to advance to the regional semifinals. The Miami men lost to Villanova in the 2016 regional semifinals.

The Miami men’s basketball team will attempt to duplicate the women defeating number one seed Indiana when they play Houston on Friday night in Kansas City. Houston is not only the Midwest Region’s number one seed, but the Cougars are also the number one ranked team in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Miami men have never defeated a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. The win over Auburn who was the second seed in the 2022 Midwest Region was the biggest win by seed in the NCAA Tournament for Miami. Miami has opened as a big underdog against Houston via Fan Duel.

Analysts all week have spoken about how the pace of play could dictate the winner. Larranaga has stated that the Miami basketball team has seen multiple styles in the ACC and can win at any pace. The game should come down to guard play. Miami needs efficient games from Bensley Joseph, Pack, Poplar and Wong.

Houston is led by its guards Tramon Mack, Marcus Sasser and Jamal Shead. Miller and Norchad Omier will match up with J’Wan Roberts and Jarace Walker inside. Houston is seventh nationally with a 7.5 rebounding margin. Miami has lost only one this season when outrebounding opponents. Rebounding will be critical.
