The Miami basketball programs are in rare company with the runs by the Men’s and women’s basketball teams to the regional semifinals. Miami defeating Indiana in the men’s and women’s tournaments makes the Hurricanes one of 10 programs to defeat the same school in an NCAA Tournament in the same year.
Miami is one of only three programs to defeat the same school in identical rounds in the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments in the same year. The Miami men’s and women’s basketball teams are one of four programs with both in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals this year.
Jim Larrananga has led the men to four regional semifinals in the past 10 NCAA Tournaments. Miami is one of only 16 teams to reach the Sweet 16 four times in the past 10 NCAA Tournaments. The Miami basketball programs are among the best in the country and especially this season.
The Miami men are also one of only five programs to make the Sweet 16 in 2022 and 2023. In 2022 Miami was the 10th seed. The Hurricanes upset seventh-seeded USC in the first round, second-seed Auburn in the second round and beat 11th-seeded Iowa State before losing to top-seed Kansas in the Regional Final.

Miami is keeping incredible company with Connecticut, Tennessee and UCLA being the only other basketball programs with the men and women qualifying for the Sweet 16. Connecticut has won four men’s basketball championships and 11 women’s, Tennessee has eight women’s titles and UCLA has 11 men’s national championships.

Jim Larranaga has turned the Miami basketball program into one of the best in the ACC during his 12-year tenure. Duke and North Carolina are the only other ACC programs with four Sweet 16 appearances in the last 10 years. Miami has advanced to the Sweet 16 in the last two NCAA Tournaments as a five and 10 seed.
