Miami baseball sweeps 3-game series versus Florida State

The Miami baseball team improved to 19-9 completing a three-game sweep of Florida State 13-4 on Sunday. Miami beat Florida State 11-0 in the series-opening game on Friday night and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Miami improved to 8-4 with tied with Virginia for first place in the ACC Coastal Division.

The Cavaliers lost two of three at Virginia Tech this weekend to drop to 24-4 overall. Miami and Virginia play a three-game series in Coral Gables next weekend. The Miami win over Florida State on Sunday gave the Seminoles their program’s worst ninth-straight loss. FSU is 12-15 overall and 3-9 in the ACC.

In the series opener on Friday night Karson Ligon pitched eight innings allowing three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. The Miami baseball team scored runs in six of the nine innings they batted on Friday night. Four Hurricanes had multiple hits, Yohandy Morales dove in two runs and Carlos Perez had three RBIs.

On Saturday afternoon Miami took a 3-0 lead to the eighth before Florida State scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth. Gabe Ziehl pitched 7.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run, with one walk and nine strikeouts. Andrew Walters pitched 1.1 innings on Saturday to earn his third save.

On Sunday Miami started the game with a run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Florida State tied the game with four runs in the top of the third. Miami answered with three in the bottom of the third inning, one in the sixth and completely pulled away with five in the eighth in the 13-4 win.

Alejandro Rosario had the third straight dominant pitching performance this weekend for Miami. Rosario pitched eight innings allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts to improve to 2-3. Miami hosts Central Florida at 6 PM ET on Tuesday night before the big three-game series versus Virginia next weekend.
