Multiple Miami basketball frontcourt departures leave transfer portal flexibility
Favour Aire, Danilo Jovanovich and Anthony Walker entering the transfer portal in the last two days leave the Miami basketball team with flexibility for adding players this spring. The transfers of Aire, Jovanovich and Walker leave Miami with Norchad Omier and A.J. Casey as the frontcourt returnees on the 2023-24 roster.
Aire and Jovanovich just concluded their freshmen years, while Walker played four seasons for the Miami basketball team and has one year of eligibility remaining. Aire scored only nine points on 3-7 from the floor and the free throw line with eight rebounds, 13 personal fouls, three turnovers, two blocks and two steals.
The only playing time for Jovanovich was two minutes versus St. Francis-Brooklyn in November. Walker has been a key player for Miami throughout most of his career with 19 starts. Walker averaged 4.9 PPG, 2.5 rebounds and had 62 blocks and 72 steals averaging 15.12 minutes per game in his Miami career.
The only Miami signee in the 2023 class is 6’10 240 pound center Michael Nwoko who helps add needed size in the frontcourt. Casey at 6’9, 213 pounds will need to add bulk over the summer. Several transfers are considering Miami including 6’9 Nova Southeastern wing Jonathan Pierre and 6’9 VCU forward Jalen DeLoach.
The roster will continue to evolve throughout the spring with the three open scholarships. Casey will be a key part of the rotation in 2023-24. Depending on what positions the Miami basketball team adds transfers at for next season Casey will either be a projected starter or at least have a chance to compete to start.
Jim Larranana and his staff will likely search for versatile players on the front line to replace what was lost with Jordan Miller exhausting his eligiblity. Pierre and/or DeLoach would provide Miami with that versatility on the frontline. Expect more transfers to emerge throughout the spring as Miami attempts to improve its roster.
