George Mira Sr. QB San Francisco 49ers 2nd round 15th overall 1964 NFL

Mira Sr. is widely considered the first great Miami quarterback. From 1961 through 1963 Mira Sr. completed 49.1 percent of his passes for 5,048 yards, 30 TDs, and 38 interceptions in a very different era throwing the football. Mira was the first Miami football player to receive Heisman Trophy votes.

Mira led Miami to berths in the Liberty and Gotham Bowls. The 1961 Liberty Bowl berth was the first bowl appearance for Miami in nine years. When Mira was inducted into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1973 he held the program records with 5,125 yards of total offense. That is now 460 yards out of 10th place.

In addition to being drafted by San Francisco in the NFL Draft, Denver Broncos selected Mira Sr in the 18th round (137th overall) of the 1964 AFL Draft. Mira Sr. spent five seasons in San Francisco, one with the Philadelphia Eagles and his final season with the Dolphins. Mira Sr. was 5-3 in eight career starts.

As a professional Mira Sr. completed 42.8 percent of his passes for 2,110 yards, 19 TDs and 20 interceptions. Mira Sr. backed up John Brodie in San Francisco and Dolphins’ Pro Football Hall of Famer Bob Griese back in Miami. Following his NFL career, Mira Sr. played in the Canadian and World Football Leagues.
