How Cavinders departure affects Miami basketball roster

Haley Cavinder tweeted on Tuesday morning that she and her twin sister Hanna have decided to forego a fifth season of college basketball. Haley led the Miami basketball team in scoring averaging 12.1 points per game and was second in assists and third in rebounds. Hanna was a key contributor off the bench.

The Cavinders transferred to Miami after three seasons at Fresno State. Haley was the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2019-20, Player of the Year in 2020-21 and set the NCAA record making 97.3 percent of her free throw attempts in 2021-22. Haley scored her Miami high of 33 points versus Florida State.

Haley told the Barstool BFF podcast with founder Dave Portnoy last month that she wanted to stay with the Miami basketball program for another year, but that Hanna wanted to move on. One of the future options for the Cavinders is future with WWE. They have frequently been compared to the Bella Twins.

The Cavinders have more than four million TikTok followers are over $1 million in NIL sponsorships. Most of those deals are predicated on the Cavinders being together. The Cavinder brand is Haley and Hanna. Splitting up could have impacted their brand negatively in the future.

In addition to the Cavinders, Miami also loses Destiny Harden who has been the heart and soul of the Hurricanes women’s basketball program, key reserve Karla Erjavec and likely center Lola Pendande. Katie Meier will build her team around rising juniors LaShae Dwyer, Latasha Lattimore, Jasmyne Roberts and Ja’Leah Williams.

Kyle Oldacre and Lazaria Spearman showed promise as freshmen. Lattimore will be returning from a season-ending knee injury. Expect Katie Meier and her staff to be busy again in the transfer portal to add depth to the roster. Per ESPN, Miami has not signed anyone in the 2023 class. That makes adding transfers more vital.
