Former Arizona guard Lemyah Hylton announced her transfer to the Miami basketball program on Sunday. Hylton is an important addition to the Miami backcourt after Haley and Hanna Cavinder who are Arizona natives decided not to return to the Hurricanes for their final season in 2023-24.

Hylton averaged 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds in 8.1 minutes per game with 15 appearances for the Wildcats last season. According to her Arizona biography, Hylton was a “Four-star recruit in the class of 2022…Ranked 85th in the ESPN HoopGurlz, the highest-rated international recruit.”

Hylton joins a Miami basketball roster that includes fellow Canadian nationals, Lashae Dwyer and Latasha Lattimore. Dwyer, Jasmyne Roberts and Ja’Leah Williams are likely starters for Miami in a three-guard lineup. Lattimore will compete to start with Krya Oldacre and Lazaria Spearman on the frontline.

Hylton was referred to as “a player that is a willing defender, quality passer and can score” by LBinsider.Com. The Miami basketball team needs to add scoring after losing Haley Cavinder and Destiny Harden who were the top two point producers for the Hurricanes during the 2022-23 season.

Hylton was one of at least four transfers Arizona lost this season. Miami has not officially lost any transfers. Haley and Hanna Cavinder deciding to move on and Harden completing her eligibility are significant losses for the Miami basketball program. Expect Katie Meier and her staff to continue recruiting the transfer portal.

Miami hopes to build on the momentum of advancing to a regional final for the first time in program history. After losing to eventual national champion South Carolina in the 2022 NCAA Tournament Miami was eliminated by LSU. who went on to win the 2023 title. The Miami men have also lost to the last two champions.
