The Miami football team played their spring game with Henry Parrish and Don Chaney Jr. as the only healthy scholarship running backs. When Miami begins training camp in August redshirt freshman Tre’Vonte Citizen should return from injury and true freshmen Mark Fletcher and Chris Johnson will have enrolled.

The Miami football team could also add a transfer RB to improve depth. In the spring game Parrish had seven carries for 26 yards and Chaney four for 17 in the first half before a running clock and no tackling was instituted for the second half. Chaney added a big TD run in the second half from about 38 yards out.

Parrish is the only returning RB that received significant snaps for Miami last season. Parrish led Miami with 604 yards rushing, averaging 4.72 yards per carry and four TDs and added 17 receptions for 120 yards and another two TDs. Chaney missed most of the season and finished with two carries for eight yards.

The Miami coaching staff was confident that Citizen would make an impact as a true freshman in 2022 before suffering a season-ending injury during 2022 August training camp. Citizen was held out of 2023 spring football recovering from the injury. Heading into the summer, Parrish and Chaney top the Miami RB depth chart.

Fletcher has the potential to challenge for meaningful snaps in 2023. Fletcher finished his American Heritage career with 4,443 yards rushing, averaging 7.3 yards per carry with 49 TDs and 23 100-yard games. Also an adept receiver at 6’2, 230 pounds, Fletcher had 46 receptions for 629 yards and four TDs in high school.

Citizen was the second-ranked RB In the Class of 2022 and at 6’1, 221 pounds provides Miami with another powerful player in the backfield. Johnson provides a speed element for Miami at RB and a player who could potentially return kicks. The Miami coaching staff will have a much better idea about their RBs in August.
