The Miami basketball program will reward head coaches Jim Larranaga and Katie Meier with contract extensions. Larranana led the men to their first Final Four in program history a year after advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time. Meier led the women to their first Elite Eight in program history.
Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald reported the contract extensions. Kaufman stated the details of the extensions are expected to be announced later this week. Larrananga and Meier both agreed to contact extensions in the spring of 2022. Larranaga is under contract through 2025-26. Meier’s contract is through 2026-27.
Kaufman reported that Larranaga was paid $2.562 million in 2022-23 per the USA Today coaches’ salary database. Larranaga was paid the eighth-highest salary in the ACC and 48th among Division I coaches. Some reports earlier this month stated that Larranaga is expected to be at least the third highest-paid ACC head coach.
Shayeann Day-Wilson who was the ACC Freshman of the Year at Duke in 2021-22 tweeted on Sunday that she will be joining the Miami basketball program for next season. Day-Wilson averaged 8.1 points per game, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 33.7 percent from the field for Duke in 2022-23.
As a freshman in 2021-22, Day-Wilson averaged 12.7 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 3.7 APG and 1.2 steals while shooting 37.7 percent from the floor. Day-Wilson will be the fourth Canadian on the Miami women’s basketball roster joining Lashae Dwyer, Latasha Lattimore and Arizona transfer Lemyah Hylton.
Day-Wilson saw her minutes drop from 27.9 per game in 2021-22 to 24.1 in 2022-23. Em Adler of the Duke Chronicle reported that Day-Wilson was potentially looking for more of a leading guard role. The departure of Haley Cavinder who lead Miami in scoring in 2022-23 and was second in assists creates a point guard opening.
Ja’Leah Williams who led Miami will 93 assists this season returns to the Hurricanes basketball roster for 2022-23. The additions of Day-Wilson and Hylton will help Miami to add needed depth to the 2022-23 roster. Day-Wilson projects as a likely starter for Miami that has experience playing in the ACC.
