10 Miami football players rivals hated the most
Santana Moss is one of the most dynamic and explosive players in Miami football history. Moss holds the all-time Miami receiving record with 2,546 yards from 1997 through 2000. Moss passed teammate Reggie Wayne in the final game in the 2001 Sugar Bowl to set the record. The hatred towards Moss is because of one quote.
Following their 2000 win over Florida State Moss said “big time players step up in big games, that’s all I’ve got to say” The quote is often misattributed as “big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games.” Moss had seven receptions for 115 yards in 2000 as Miami ended a seven-game losing streak to Florida State.
The comment after the ended the losing streak to Florida State will forever be a part of the rivalry lore. Moss likely did not endear himself to Florida State fans with that comment. Moss continued to speak his mind throughout the remainder of his career. The Miami Hall of Famer will always be associated with the Hurricanes.
Moss holds the Miami school record with 4,402 all-purpose yards, 1,196 punt return yards and punt returns for TDs with six, in addition to the receiving yardage record. The four punt return TDs Moss had in 2002 is an NCAA record. Moss was the 2000 Big Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Year.
Moss was the only player to receive those awards in the same season. Following the 2000 season, Moss was named an All-American. The New York Jets selected Moss with the 16th pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. After four seasons with the Jets Moss was traded to Washington. Moss retired following the 2014 season.
