Miami basketball stars Haley and Hanna Cavinder trolled the NCAA at their graduation over the weekend. The Miami women’s basketball team was put on probation following the Cavinders meeting with Hurricanes’ benefactor John Ruiz. Head coach Katie Meier was suspended three games and Miami had other sanctions.

The meeting between the Cavinders and Ruiz was facilitated by Meier. Meier and Ruiz exchanged messages with Ruiz to let the Cavinders know who he was prior to their official visits to the Miami basketball program last summer. Miami was fined $5,000, had official visits decrease by seven percent and recruiting days reduced by nine.

The Miami basketball staff was not allowed to conduct recruiting communications until three weeks after the transfer portal opened which was April 3. Miami was not hindered. The Miami women’s basketball program added four transfers this spring to the 2023-24 roster. The Cavinders are prolific on social media.

The Cavinders have 4.5 million Tik Tok followers with 140.5 likes and their own Instagram accounts have a combined 650,000 followers. They built their social media followings during covid. The Cavinders chose to forego their final season of college eligibility following graduation. They could have returned as graduate students.

As the video states above the Cavinders asked facetiously “us calling the NCAA to ask if we are allowed to graduate.” A sound bite with a phone ringing was inserted in the video. The Cavinders have trolled the NCAA a few times throughout the season after Meier’s suspension to begin the 2022-23 Miami basketball season.

Haley led the Miami basketball team averaging 12.2 points per game plus contributed 4.9 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists. Haley set an NCAA record by making 97.3 percent of her free throw attempts with Fresno State in 2021-22. Hanna contributed 3.8 PPG, 1.3 RPG and 1.6 APG off the bench.
