CBS Sports ranked all 69 of the Power Five head coaches. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal is 39th. Cristobal dropped was ranked 19th in 2022 after leading Oregon to three straight Pac-12 North titles before Miami hired him in December 2021. Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern dropped 24 spots from 2022 to 45th.

The Miami football team built a lot of momentum during the 2022 off-season after hiring Mario Cristobal. After a 5-7 record that included blowout losses to Duke and Middle Tennessee State in games they were favored at home and to Pittsburgh to end the season, Miami will have to regain its confidence in 2023.

The expectations will be moderate for Mario Cristobal and the Miami football team in 2023. Miami opens the season on September 1 versus Miami (Ohio). Consensus expectations project Miami to start the 2023 season at least 4-1. Miami will be favored versus Miami (Ohio), Bethune-Cookman, Temple and Georgia Tech.

FanDuel lists Texas A&M as a 7.5-point favorite over Miami in week two. Texas A&M has a 51.2 percent chance to defeat Miami on September 9 per the ESPN Football Power Index. Miami lost 17-9 at Texas A&M in 2022. The blowout losses will constantly be stated by Cristobal’s detractors.

Miami signed the seventh-ranked recruiting class and sixth-best transfer class in the 2023 cycle. Cristobal has continually stated the need for Miami to upgrade the talent on its roster. The hope is that the Hurricanes have accomplished that during the 2023 offseason. Now Miami needs to perform for Cristobal to move up next year.
