Miami football 2024 class up to 23rd with DL Daylen Russell commitment
The commitment of three-star defensive lineman Daylen Russell moved the 2024 Miami football class to 23rd nationally. Miami passed Mississippi and Wisconsin moving up from the 25th class nationally. Russell is an under-ranked DL who was the Miami Herald Miami-Dade County 4M-3M 2022 Defensive Player of the Year.
Per David Wilson of the Herald, Russell had 62 tackles, eight tackles for loss and eight sacks in 2022 helping lead Miami Columbus to a state championship. Miami beat out Louisville and Nebraska for a Russell commitment. Russell recently named Louisville, Miami and Nebraska as his three finalists.
Russell is the ninth 2024 commit to the Miami football program and the fourth on defense. Miami previously received commitments for 2024 on defense from safeties Dylan Day and Isaiah Thomas and earlier this week from linebacker Vincent Shavers. Co-defensive line coach Joe Salave’a is credited by 247 Sports with being the lead recruiter for Russell. Expect Miami to continue to move up the rankings in June. Miami is hosting 37 2024 prospects for official visits in June. Multiple 2023 Miami signees took their official visits in June.
Russell told Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U that he plans on taking official visits with his mom but right now he is fully locked into Miami. Louisville received a visit from Russell in March. Russell attended Junior Day at Miami in January. Central Florida and Florida State were in Russell’s top five before he narrowed that to a final three.
There were no 247 Sports crystal balls logged for Russell prior to his commitment to Miami on Saturday. On3 projects Miami with a 75.9 percent chance for Russell to sign with the Hurricanes. At 6’3 and 255 pounds expect Russell to continue developing physically. Miami will likely add more defensive tackles in the 2024 class.
The Hurricanes are trending for 2024 five-star DT Justin Scott. Mario Cristobal has also made the DL a priority through the transfer portal. Miami added transfer DTs Anthony Campbell from Louisiana, Branson Deen from Purdue and Thomas Gore from Georgia State to the 2023 roster.
