Tyler Van Dyke is sixth in The Sporting News 2024 ACC quarterback rankings. Van Dyke will have a lot to prove to outsiders that he is closer to his breakout 2021 season than the regression that happened in 2022. Van Dyke will enter the 2023 season healthy under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.

The ACC is deep at QB entering the 2023 season. North Carolina QB Drake Maye is the fifth projected pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. PFF projects Maye as the second QB taken in the 2024 NFL Draft. Maye was the 2022 ACC Player of the Year. Jordan Travis who was the second-team 2022 All-ACC QB returns for Florida State in 2023.

Maye and Travis are listed as the top two QBs in the ACC entering the 2023 season. The Sporting News includes Notre Dame in the rankings. Sam Hartman who was third-team All-ACC in 2022 at Wake Forest transferred to Notre Dame for the 2023 season. Riley Leonard of Duke is fourth and Cade Klubnik of Clemson is fifth.

Dawson runs a modified version of the Air Raid offense. Expect Tyler Van Dyke to throw deep more often. Dawson will play to Van Dyke’s strengths more often than former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis did last season. Bill Trocchi wrote summaries for each of the 15 ACC QBs for The Sporting News.

"6. MiamiStarter: Junior Tyler Van Dyke (18 career starts at Miami)Backup: Sophomore Jacurri BrownSituation heading into the fall: “Van Dyke was the ACC rookie of the year as a freshman after winning six of his nine starts, but his production fell off in 2022. Miami went 3-6 in his nine starts, and Van Dyke finished as the eighth-rated passer in the conference. He battled injuries and he still wasn’t 100 percent at the start of the spring. Van Dyke will be on his third offensive coordinator in three years after Mario Cristobol replaced Josh Gattis with Shannon Dawson. He spent the past three seasons as offensive coordinator at Houston, where he led an offense that threw the ball 51 percent of the time and finished an average No. 22 nationally in passing. Brown started two games last season and threw 45 passes over five games. He was 14-for-19 for 136 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Georgia Tech.”"

Van Dyke will have a more experienced WR corps in 2023 to work with. Xavier Restrepo enters the 2023 season after missing multiple games in 2022 and Colbie Young should be more consistent in his second season playing in FBS. The addition of Tyler Harrell provides Van Dyke with the deep threat he was missing last season.

Brown added 54 carries for 223 yards rushing in 2022. Expect Brown to be utilized by Dawson in short yardage in 2023. Brown completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 2022. Brown needs to improve his accuracy as the backup to Van Dyke in 2023.

Van Dyke thrived in the high-octane offense under Rhett Lashlee in 2021. Miami will likely be a bit more conservative in 2023 under Dawson. The Hurricanes will strive for a balanced offense in 2023. Dawson stated that the only way to be able to take shots downfield is to run the ball effectively. That will help Van Dyke.
