Miami baseball eliminated by Texas after win over Louisiana Sunday
After defeating Louisiana 8-5 in an elimination game on Sunday the Miami baseball team was eliminated 10-6 by Texas in the regional final in Coral Gables on Sunday. Texas handed Miami both of its regional losses with a 4-1 victory last night. Miami finished the season 42-21. Texas moves on to the Super Regional.
Miami got off to a good start versus Texas. Dominic Pitelli hit a three-run home run in the top of the second to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead. That lead lasted an inning and a half. Texas erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the third to seize a 9-3 lead. The Texas burst was punctuated by a Jalin Flores grand slam.
Flores is hitting .176 this season. Texas added a 10th run when Porter Brown was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning with the bases loaded to force home a run. Yohandy Morales hit his third home run of the day and fourth in the regional in the seventh with a three-run shot to close the gap to 10-6.
Miami didn’t threaten much after the nine-run Texas third inning other than the Morales HR. The pitching for Texas was the difference in the regional. Lebarron Johnson shut Miami down on Saturday night. Johnson threw 129 pitches in a complete game allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Facing elimination versus Louisiana Blake Cyr got the Miami baseball team off to a good start with a three-run home run in the two of the first inning. Miami never trailed but Louisiana twice cut the deficit to one run. Jacolby Long and Morales hit eighth-inning HRs to provide insurance and Miami survived 8-5 over Louisiana.
Morales had four hits in five at-bats with three runs scored, three RBIs and two HRs. Alejandro Torres pitched 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, three earned with two walks and six strikeouts for the win over Louisiana. Andrew Walters pitched three innings allowing one run with four strikeouts for the save.
Morales and Walters have played their last game for Miami. Morales is the 17th ranked prospect per MLB.Com and Walters is 121st. Miami will lose a lot off the 2023 roster. The Hurricanes will build their 2024 roster around Cyr, Edgardo Villegas and Gage Ziehl who got the win in the regional opener over Maine on Friday night.
