Gino DiMare resigns after 5 years leading Miami baseball program
Head coach Gino DiMare has resigned after five years of leading the Miami baseball program to a 168-86 record. Miami lost as a host in the NCAA Tournament regional for the second straight season. The Hurricanes were 42-21 overall in 2023, 18-12 in the ACC and finished runner-up in the conference tournament.
Miami looked good at the end of the 2023 season winning two out of three in the final regular season series versus Duke and three of four in the ACC Tournament. Miami defeated North Carolina State 4-2 to clinch a berth in the ACC Tournament semifinals and Duke 4-2 in pool play.
Miami upset number one seed Wake Forest 7-2 in the ACC Tournament semifinals. Wake Forest is the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosts Alabama in Super Regional this weekend. Miami lost 11-5 to Clemson in the ACC Tournament title Game. Miami hosted Louisiana, Maine and Texas in the NCAA Tournament.
After defeating Maine 9–1, Miami lost 4-1 to Texas, before defeating Louisiana 8-5 in an elimination game. Texas eliminated Miami 10-6 largely behind a nine-run third inning that the Hurricanes were not able to recover from. Miami took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a Blake Cyr three-run home run.
"“After evaluating this past season and talking extensively with my family, I have decided it is in my best interests and the best interests of the program to step away as head coach…I would like to thank President Frenk and Dan Radakovich for their support, and Blake James for giving me the opportunity to become the head coach at Miami.I want to thank my coaches and staff for all their hard work, and especially the players – the relationships I have built with them are something I will cherish forever.”"
The above statement was from DiMare posted on the Miami Hurricanes website. Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich said a search for a new baseball coach will begin immediately. One name to watch could be Marlins’ first base coach and Miami baseball alum Jon Jay. Jay is a Miami Columbus alum.
There has been some speculation that pitching coach J.D. Arteaga could also be a candidate. Arteaga just completed his 21st season on the Miami baseball staff. Miami finished 68th nationally in 2023 with a 5.07 earned run average. The Hurricanes have not had a stable pitching rotation since the Covid-shortened 2020 season.
Miami has not advanced to the Super Regional since 2016. Miami won the Coral Gables Regional and Super Regionals to advance to its most recent College World Series. The Hurricanes earned the sixth overall national seed in 2022 which projected Miami to Omaha and the ninth national seed in 2023.
Miami was not able to get out of the regional at home in 2022 despite it including Mississippi who was widely regarded as the last team to earn an NCAA tournament berth. The Rebels would go on to win its first College World Series. Miami won its first 2022 NCAA Tournament game before being eliminated after losing its next two.
