Miami Hurricanes News: FB top 10 for 5-Star OT, Wong visits Lakers
The Miami Hurricanes were named in the top 10 for five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker. Miami basketball star Isaiah Wong worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the NBA Draft on Thursday. Former LSU National Championship head coach Paul Manieri has emerged as a candidate with Miami.
Baker named Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington as his 10 finalists. Oregon is the leader for Baker with an 84.6 percent chance for a commitment per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. Miami is projected with less than a one percent chance for Baker.
Baker is listed as the 21st prospect, top OT and second-best recruit in California out of national powerhouse Santa Ana, Mater Dei. Ohio State received an official visit from Baker last weekend. Texas is receiving an official visit from Baker this weekend. Georgia will host Baker for an official visit next weekend.
Christopher Stock of Inside the U wrote that Wong worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers with six other prospects on Wednesday. The Lakers have the 17th overall pick in the first round and the 47th overall pick in the second round in the 2023 NBA Draft that will take place this coming Thursday.
NBADraft.Net projects Wong to be selected with the 47th overall pick in the second round by the Portland Trail Blazers. Former Miami star Lonnie Walker who was the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft is currently on the Lakers. Wong decided to forego his final collegiate season after earning the ACC Player of the Year.
Mainieri is Christopher Columbus High School alum which is also the alma mater of Miami Hurricanes football coach Mario Cristobal and Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol. Manieri was the head coach at St. Thomas (FL) from 1983–1988, Air Force from 1989–1994, Notre Dame from 1995–2006 and LSU from 2007–2021.
In 39 seasons as a college head coach, Manieri has an overall record of 1,501 wins, 775 losses and eight ties. Manieri has a postseason record of 71-43. Maniere led Notre Dame to a College World Series appearance in 2022. LSU had five College World Series appearances under Manieri that included the 2009 championship.
