The Miami football team faces an important developmental year at quarterback entering the 2023 season. Tyler Van Dyke enters the 2023 season with his third offensive coordinator in four seasons at Miami. Jacurri Brown earned valuable experience as a true freshman in 2022. Miami signed three-star QB Emory Williams.

Van Dyke completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions and a 160.1 passer rating during his 2021 breakout season. Van Dyke was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year following the 2021 season.

The new offense with Josh Gattis as coordinator and injuries hindered Van Dyke as a redshirt sophomore in 2022. Van Dyke completed 63.2 percent of his passes in 2022 for 1,835 yards, 10 TDs and five interceptions with a 133.6 passer rating. Van Dyke should improve under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.

Brown completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three TDs, three interceptions with a 111.6 passer rating as a true freshman in 2022. Brown was also utilized as a dual threat with 54 carries for 223 yards rushing. The Miami football team needs Brown to become more consistent as a passer in 2023.

Brown was likely headed toward a redshirt season in 2022. The injuries to Van Dyke and ineffectiveness from former Miami QB Jake Garcia pressed Brown into playing time out of the redshirt. Garcia completed 59.6 percent of his passes for 803 yards, five TDs and four interceptions in 2022.

Williams was a three-star consensus prospect in the class of 2023. The 247 Sports composite ranked Williams as the 625th overall prospect, the 33rd QB and the 99th recruit in Florida out of Milton. Williams completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 4,380 yards, 40 TDs and seven interceptions in the last three years.

Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports projects Williams as a developmental prospect with traits that everyone covets. At 6’4 and 190 pounds, Williams has the ideal build at QB. Williams is primarily a pocket passer with the ability to run for positive yardage when he needs to. Ivins states Willams has the ability to be a Power Five starter.

The development of Van Dyke, Brown and Williams will determine the future of the Miami QBs beyond the 2023 season. If Van Dyke produces like he did in 2021 there is no question it will be time to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. A Van Dyke departure makes the development of Brown and Williams more critical in 2023.

The Miami football program has a commitment from three-star 2024 6’6 and 210-pound QB Judd Anderson. With three mostly inexperienced QBs entering the 2024 season if Van Dyke leaves, Miami could pursue a transfer QB in 2024. Without Van Dyke in 2024, Miami will at least need to add depth to its roster at QB.
