Miami football battling for OL Moritz Schmoranzer with Friday commitment
The Miami football team is battling with West Virginia and Pittsburgh ahead of the commitment announcement on Friday for three-star offensive tackle Moritz Schmoranzer. West Virginia has a 39.6 percent chance for a commitment from Schmoranzer, Miami is at 34.7 percent and Virginia Tech is at 20.1 percent per On3.
Schmoranzer is originally from Germany. Schmoranzer is the 984th best prospect, 71st interior offensive lineman and 27th player in Virginia out of Roanoke, North Cross School per the 247 Sports composite rankings. Three-star OT Juan Minaya is the only OL committed to Miami in the 2024 class.
Schmoranzer is listed as an OT by On3 and Rivals, an interior offensive lineman by 247 Sport and a guard by ESPN. Miami, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and West Virginia hosted Schmoranzer for official visits this month. No other programs hosted Schmoranzer. Twelve other FBS programs offered Schmoranzer per 247 Sports.
Georgia Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest were the only other Power Five programs to offer Schmoranzer a scholarship. Schmoranzer would add depth to the Miami OL and would likely redshirt as a true freshman in 2024. Miami signed five OL in the 2023 class plus transfers Javion Cohen and Matt Lee.
Five-star 2023 OT signee Francis Mauigoa is a projected starter this fall. Samson Okunlola was another five-star 2023 OT signee. Okunlola will likely be in the rotation on the Miami OL in 2023. The Miami football program also signed three-star OL Tommy Kinsler, Antonio Tripp and Frankie Tinilau in the 2023 class.
The 2024 Miami football class currently ranks 28th which includes Minaya. Kinsler, Tinilau and Tripp are all redshirt candidates in 2023. Cohen has two years of eligibility remaining. Lee is in his final year of eligibility. Mauigoa and Okunlola are the projected anchors on the Miami OL in 2024 and beyond.
This is the last weekend of official visits. Miami could receive two commits from OL this week. In addition to Schmoranzer, three-star Lexington, Kentucky, Frederick Douglass OT Zuri Madison is likely making his commitment announcement on Wednesday according to a report from CaneSport.
