Miami Hurricanes News: New baseball coach, 3-star S Ryan Mack commits
The Miami Hurricanes baseball team named pitching coach J.D. Arteaga as the new head coach replacing Gino DiMare on Monday. Three-star legacy safety Ryan Mack committed to the Miami football program. Four-star wide receiver Jacory Barney received a surge of crystal balls toward Miami on Monday morning.
Arteaga was promoted to head coach replacing DiMare after spending the last 20 years as the pitching coach for the Miami Hurricanes baseball program. Arteaga was a record-setting pitcher for the Hurricanes in the 1990s. Turning around a pitching staff that yielded a 5.07 earned run average in 2023.
Mack is a three-star safety in the 2024 class. Mack’s father Rod was a linebacker with the Miami Hurricanes in the 1990s. The commitment from Mack moved Miami to the 23rd best class nationally in the On3 composite rankings. Mack is the third safety committed to the 2024 Miami class after Dylan Day and Isaiah Thomas.
Steve Wiltfong 247 Sports Director of Football Recruiting and four Nebraska writers project Barney to Miami. Barney is the 415th-ranked prospect, 35th athlete and 62nd player in the 2024 class per the 247 Sports Composite rankings. Barney is also trending to Miami via On3 with a 71.1 percent chance for a commitment.
Sam Gillenwater of On3 wrote about the experience of Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke at the Manning Passing Academy. Van Dyke liked working with the Manning brothers, meeting the other college football QBs and working with the young players. Van Dyke will be a mentor to young Miami QBs Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams.
Marcus Benjamin of Canes County asked, “Did Miami do enough in June to land five-star 2024 talents?” Benjamin examined five-star defensive linemen Justin Scott, Dylan Stewart, Colin Simmons, Kamorion Franklin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Miami has signed four five-star prospects in the last three classes.
Miami signed five-star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and safety James Williams in the 2021 class. Five-star offensive tackles Francisco Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola signed with the Miami Hurricanes in the 2023 class. Miami has been involved with more five-star prospects since Mario Cristobal was hired in December 2021.
