Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables tried using an analogy that the Sooners’ 6-7 season wasn’t as bad as losing 45-3 to Florida State or being blown out by Middle Tennessee State in a not thinly veiled reference to the 2022 Miami football season. Miami finished 5-7 in 2022 in their first season under Mario Cristobal.

Venables elaborated that had they gotten blown out by Middle Tennessee State and lost 45-3 to Florida State the conversation about the 2022 season for Oklahoma would have been different. Oklahoma finished the regular season with a 6-6 record to earn a berth in the Cheez-It Bowl versus Florida State.

Florida State defeated Oklahoma 35-32. Oklahoma had three-point losses to Baylor, Texas Tech and West Virginia and a seven-point loss versus Big XII Champion Kansas State. Oklahoma also lost 55-24 to College Football Playoff runner-up TCU and 49-0 to Texas who finished the 2022 season 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the Big XII.

Two of the 2022 losses for Oklahoma were at home. The Sooners finished the 2022 season 2-3 on the road. Miami was 3-2 on the road in 2022. Most of the discouraging losses for the Miami football team occurred at home in 2022. Both teams overcame poor 2022 seasons by top 10 2023 recruiting and transfer classes.

Miami signed the seventh-best 2023 recruiting class and seventh best transfer class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Oklahoma signed the fourth-best recruiting class and ninth-best transfer class according to 247 Sports. Venables inherited a much better situation than Cristobal did.

Miami has had one 10-win season since 2004. Oklahoma just had its first losing season since 1998. Context is always important. Venables putting his own spin on the 2022 Oklahoma football season is expected. Both programs took steps back in 2022, but Oklahoma failed to win 10 games for only the fifth time since 2000.

Expect Cristobal to be provided more leeway for success by his administration. In the CBS Sports Hot Seat Rankings evaluating job security this week Dennis Dodd stated the pressure is mounting for Venables and that Cristobal is all good…for now. Cristobal and Venables could both have program-defining seasons in 2023.
