Miami football remains 7th in updated transfer portal rankings
The transfer class for the Miami football program remained seventh nationally in an update from 247 Sports. Brad Crawford of 247 Sports wrote about the “Transfer portal rankings: College football’s 10 best classes in 2023 recruiting cycle.” Miami has the seventh ranked transfer class nationally and second in the ACC.
The MIami football program has remade their cornerback unit, defensive and offensive lines through the 2023 offseason in the transfer portal. Nine of the 15 transfers new to the 2023 Miami roster are at CB or on the OL or DL. Several of those players will be starters for Miami in 2023.
The transfers on the OL signficiantly upgrade the talent for Miami with five-star freshmen offensive tackles Francis Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola who are the highest rated 2023 signees. Mauigoa is projected to be a starter this fall and Okunlola will compete to be a part of the rotation.
Anthony Campbell, Branson Deen and Thomas Gore add depth for Miami on the interior of the DL. Davonte Brown and Jaden Davis are projected as starters at CB with Jaidus Richard providing depth, length (at 6’2) and three years of remaining eligiblity. Crawford summarized the top incoming Miami transfers.
"7. MIAMI HURRICANESTotal transfers: 16Hot names: Javion Cohen, OL (Alabama); Matt Lee, OL (UCF); Francisco Mauigoa, LB (Washington State)Intel: “The Hurricanes made acquiring help in the trenches a priority in the portal, landing five players up front. Former USC linebacker Mauigoa could step into a starting role at the center of Miami’s defense.Considering last season’s disappointment in Mario Cristobal’s first season, the Hurricanes are focused on bouncing back and hope some new blood from the portal and their 2023 freshman signing class can help out.”"
Cohen, Lee and Mauigoa are locks as starters and expected to upgrade the production for Miami on the OL and at LB. At 6’3 and 230 pounds Campbell also provides Miami with size on the interior of the DL at 6’7 and 280 pounds. Brown and Davis bring multiple years of experience as starters at CB.
The new infusion of talent is expected to upgrade the depth and talent on the Miami roster. Miami ranked 12th in the 2022, 247 Sports team talent composite rankings. The 2024 team talent composite rankings will be released later this year. Miami should be ranked higher after signing top 10 recruiting and transfer classes.
