5-star DE Colin Simmons’ mom wants Jason Taylor to coach him

Monica McCarley, the mother of five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons told Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports that defensive line coach Jason Taylor is amazing and if anything she wants her son to be coached by him on the Miami football program. Simmons took an official visit to Miami the weekend of June 9.

LSU and Texas each have a 247 Sports crystal ball projecting that they will receive a commitment from Simmons. Wiltfong who is the 247 Sports Director of Football Recruiting logged the crystal ball projecting Simmons to LSU on July 13. On3 projects Texas with a 58.5 percent chance for a Simmons commitment.

LSU is second with a 21.5 percent chacne for a Simmons commitment. Miami is given less than a one percent chance for a commitment from Simmons by On3. Simmons is listed as the eighth best prospect overall, the top edge rusher and prospect in Texas out of powerhouse program Duncanville.

Wiltfong posted on Monday that “Five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons and his family have enjoyed the summer wave of college visits.” Simmons took official visits to SMU, Oregon, Alabama, Texas and Texas A&M in addition to Miami. Wiltfong praised Simmons as “As electric a defensive player as there is in the country.”

If anything he’d be the one coach I’d love for Colin to be coached by. Four-star edge rusher Marquis Lightfoot is the only prospect committed to Miami at the position for 2024. Jahfari Harvey and Akheem Mesidor are entering what is expected to be their final seasons in 2023. Miami has recruited well behind them in the last two classes at edge rusher.

Nyjalik Kelly was impressived in limited playing time as a true freshman in 2022. Cyrus Moss is expected to receive more snaps in 2023. True freshmen Rueben Bain and Jayden Wayne could push their way into the rotation this fall. Simmons would be the highest rated edge rusher on the Miami roster.

Per Wiltfong, Simmons had 79 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks and 45 quarterback hurries as a junior. Miami is the only program that Simmons in considering that can offer the opportunity to be coached by a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in Jason Taylor. That is helping Miami recruit elite edge rushers.
