The Miami football program ranks 28th in wins among teams that have not made the College Football Playoff. Miami has 66 wins since the inauguration of the College Football Playoff following the 2014 season per Pete Fiutak of the College Football News. Fiutak studied the 20 best programs not to make the CFP.

In an extensive article titled “20 Best Programs To Not Make The College Football Playoff: 23 for 2023″ Fiutak asked the question “Who has been the closest – and won the most games – in the College Football Playoff era without making that final step?” He elected to use wins to judge the best teams not to make the CFP.

The article stated that “Group of Five schools on this list faced far easier schedules than the Power Five programs.” The cutoff point for the top 20 schools is 70 wins. Another 10 schools are listed under the programs”Also In the Mix.” Miami came in eighth among programs also in the mix with the 66 wins.

Miami is 66-47 since the beginning of the 2014 season. That comes out to an average of 7.33 wins and 5.22 losses per season. Miami had 35 of those 66 wins in the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020 seasons combined. In the 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 four seasons, Miami is 31-32.

Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, and Washington are the 14 programs that have earned berths in the College Football Playoff. Cincinnati, Florida State, LSU, Michigan State, Oregon, TCU and Washington have one CFP appearance.

In 2017 when Miami entered the final week of the regular season with a 10-0 record and ranked second nationally was the only year Miami seriously challenged for a berth in the College Football Playoff. With the CFP expanding to 12 teams following the 2024 season, the hope is for Miami to challenge for a berth.
