Miami football career passing leader No. 5: Gino Torretta

  • 7,690 passing yards
  • 47 passing touchdowns
  • 24 interceptions

The most prosperous time period in the history of the Hurricanes’ football program involved Gino Torretta — so much so that the least successful season Miami had during that time period, a 10-win Cotton Bowl victory, was Torretta’s sophomore slump. Torretta never would go on to be great in the NFL, but his impact on the U was so prolific that it ultimately takes nothing away from his legacy.

Granted, his 1992 Heisman victory was condemned by Dawn of the Dawg’s Eric Taylor as a product of the team’s success.

"“With [Houston’s Jimmy] Klingler actually having the best quarterback performance of 1992 there is no way that Torretta deserved to win the Heisman for the best overall player in the country,” Taylor prefaced before saying, “He clearly won it because of what Miami accomplished as a team and not for what he did as an individual player.”"

Regardless of anyone’s opinion of the matter, Torretta has everything you can ever want to have achieved as a quarterback who donned the green and orange.
