Miami football OC Shannon Dawson shares Jacurri Brown dominant trait
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald quoted offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson stating that sophomore quarterback Jacurri Brown provides the Miami football team with an extremely dominant trait. Brown was pressed into significant playing time as a true freshman due to a shoulder injury by Tyler Van Dyke.
At 6’4 and 210 pounds with elite athleticism and a big arm, Brown provides Miami with excellent skill sets at QB. Brown completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions with a 111.6 passer rating in 2022, while adding 54 carries for 223 rushing yards.
The rushing numbers included 68 yards lost on sacks. Brown had a long run of 40 yards, ran for 16 first downs, added 10 runs for 10 or more yards and two of 20 yards. Entering training camp, Brown is slated as the primary backup to Van Dyke, but could be pushed by true freshman Emory Williams who is more accurate.
The key for Brown will be improving his accuracy. Brown completed five of 11 passes for 55 yards in the spring game. Expect Brown to be utilized in short-yardage situations this season. Brown was frequently utilized in short yardage last season when Van Dyke was still the starting QB.
In leading the Miami football team to a 35-14 win at Georgia Tech in November, Brown had 19 carries for 87 yards. Brown also showed exceptional speed in high school.
The 247 Sports scouting report by Andrew Ivins credited Brown
with running a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and a 4.4 in the short shuttle in high school.
"“He probably made as many strides as anybody in the spring, from the beginning…Every quarterback has things to work on in their lower body – I want calm feet…With JB, when he has some quietness to his feet, the guy is super accurate…I’m excited to see him in camp. The guy has an extremely dominant trait: he’s big, he’s athletic, has a strong arm. I need to harness all that stuff into what we do on offense. I’m very pleased with him.”"
Dawson is clearly intrigued by the athleticism and skill set Brown has. If Dawson can harness the feet for Brown he clearly believes the accuracy will follow. Brown should receive extensive playing time early in the season if the Miami football team has extensive leads. Miami will be a big favorite in three of the first four games.
Brown needs to continue to develop in training camp. The Miami offense struggled with Brown as the primary QB last season. Van Dyke praised Brown “Jacurri’s really improved with his accuracy and stay in the pocket a little more, yeah so he’s he’s been a lot better with that and he’s going to continue to get better with that.”
