Miami Hurricanes News: Training camp starts, awards watch lists

The Miami Hurricanes football team opened training camp on Tuesday. Guard Javion Cohen was named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy. Safety Kamren Kinchens was named to the preseason watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy. The Miami basketball team left for its France trip on Tuesday.

All of the major Miami Hurricanes media outlets covered the first day of training camp on Tuesday. Susan Miller-Degnan and David Wilson of the Miami Herald provided observations from training camp. Miller-Degnan and Wilson’s colleague Barry Jackson wrote about Jason Taylor, defensive linemen and breakout players.

David Lake of Inside the U wrote that “Mario Cristobal is pleased with Miami’s approach on day one of fall camp.” Lake extensively quoted Cristobal about multiple Miami players. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke spoke about new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and his backups Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams.

Marcus Benjamin of Canes County wrote that “Mario Cristobal talks growth after day one of fall camp.” Benjamin provided a unique perspective analyzing what Cristobal said versus what he meant. Cristobal discussed a variety of topics about the offense and defense and players on each of those units.

The Miami basketball team tweeted on Tuesday Out Miami! Officially on our way to France.” Miami will play three games in France beginning on Friday. The trip will provide Florida State transfer Matthew Cleveland and freshmen Paul Djobet, Kyshawn George and Michael Nwoko a chance to get acclimated to the Hurricanes.

The CaneSport staff wrote that Cristobal said “Biggest flash was the progress of culture” after the first day of practice. Cristobal elaborated that Miami has “progress with culture, progress with understanding our system and moving fast.” CaneSport quoted Cristobal saying that competition at every position will make Miami better.

Alex Donno of Locked on Canes highlighted a strong first day of training camp for Vanderbilt transfer Jaidus Richard. Donno stated that Richard was his day one. At 6’2 Richard provides length for Miami. Donno reported that Richard had a pass breakup and an interception of starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
