Brad Crawford of 247 Sports named Tyler Van Dyke on his list of Quarterbacks with most to prove during 2023 season.” After winning the ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021, Van Dyke was unable to live up to sizable expectations entering the 2022 season.

Injuries and ineffectiveness hindered Van Dyke in 2022. Under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, Van Dyke enters the 2023 season with far more muted expectations. Van Dyke completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2021.

Van Dyke finished the 2021 season with six consecutive games throwing for 300 yards and three TDs in each game. In 2022 Van Dyke completed 63.2 percent of his passing attempts for 1,835 yards 10 TDs and five interceptions. Prior to an injured shoulder last season, Van Dyke showed signs of his 2021 production.

In consecutive weeks versus North Carolina and Virginia Tech, Van Dyke threw for 838 combined yards, five TDs and one interception. After the shoulder injury, Van Dyke completed 19 passes in 32 attempts for 188 yards with one TD and one interception. Healthy entering the 2023 season, Van Dyke should be closer to 2021.

"TYLER VAN DYKE, MIAMI“Tyler Van Dyke entered the 2022 season as one of the ACC’s top returning passers following a 25-touchdown campaign, but managed just 10 touchdown passes in nine games as the Hurricanes’ offense struggled mightily. Van Dyke’s redemption opportunity comes now.”"

Dawson has been praised for utilizing the skill sets of the players on his roster. Van Dyke seemed to throw the ball deep more often in the spring game than he did last season. The consensus analysis has been to expect the Miami offense to be more explosive during the 2023 season than they were in 2022.

Florida State,  North Carolina and Texas A&M are the only teams on the 2023 Miami schedule that Van Dyke played against in 2022. The Aggies, Seminoles and Tar Heels present different motivations for Van Dyke. In two seasons as the Miami starting QB Van Dyke has not defeated Florida State.

Van Dyke has had success in two starts versus North Carolina and had a mediocre game versus Texas A&M in 2022. Miami will be an underdog in all three games. For Miami to improve in 2023, Van Dyke needs to be far closer to his 2021 form than last season. Miami opens the season on September 1 versus Miami (Ohio).
